Women's Basketball Falls to Creighton, 64-45

OMAHA, Neb. - Janae Smith just missed a double-double, as she led the Illinois State women's basketball team with nine points and nine rebounds, but Creighton's shooting was too much, as the Redbirds fell, 64-45, Friday at D.J. Sokol Arena.

Jamie Russell also scored nine points, along with four rebounds and two steals. Brianna Puni grabbed eight boards, while Smith and Candace Sykes each had three assists. Illinois State (10-5, 2-1 MVC) made 29 percent of its shots, while Creighton (11-3, 3-0 MVC) connected on 47 percent of its attempts. The Bluejays had a slight advantage on the boards, 38-37. ¬

Illinois State scored in its first two possessions of the game, but missed four-straight attempts, while Creighton went on a 13-2 run to take an eight-point advantage, 15-7, at the 14:10 mark of the first half. The Redbirds scored eight-straight points, including three free throws by Smith and a three by Sykes to cut the Bluejays' lead to three, 20-17, with 6:08 remaining before the break. During the run, ISU held CU scoreless for over five minutes, but the Bluejays came back to life offensively, as they ended the half with a 13-4 run. The Redbirds headed into the locker room down by 12 points, 35-23.

Smith and Sykes each tallied five points in the opening half, while seven players scored. Smith pulled down six boards, while Russell recorded two steals. Creighton shot 50 percent from the field, as Illinois State made 32 percent of its shot attempts in the first half. The Redbirds had a one-rebound advantage on the boards, 18-17.

Coming out of the break, Illinois State continued to struggle from the field, as five of ISU's first seven points came off of free throws by Russell. Creighton maintained its momentum from the first half, as it used a 6-0 run to take a 51-32 advantage with 8:48 to play in the game. Despite a late offensive attack, the Redbirds couldn't take the momentum away from the Bluejays and fell, 64-45, their largest margin of defeat this season.

 

 

The Redbirds will be back in action Sunday at 2:05 p.m., as they take on Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
