May 16, 2013

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State will serve as host for three Missouri Valley Conference Championship events in 2014, as announced by MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin Thursday. ISU will serve as tournament host for the men's and women's tennis championship, softball and men's golf next year.

"We are honored to be selected to host three Missouri Valley Champions next spring," Illinois State Executive Associate Athletic Director Larry Lyons stated. "We take pride in providing MVC student-athletes with a first-class experience on our campus, thus we have high expectations for softball and tennis. We are also pleased to renew our relationship with the good folks up at TPC Deere Run and provide the men's golf teams an opportunity to play at a PGA TOUR facility, which was designed and built by ISU alum D.A. Weibring and makes that event even more special to us."

The 2014 MVC Men's and Women's Tennis Team Championship will be played April 25-27, at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill. Since opening in April 2008, the Gregory Street Tennis Courts have been the home of both the Illinois State men's and women's tennis teams and played host to several tournaments. The facility has 12 courts, used for both practice and home matches, and grass berms that assist in blocking wind while providing additional seating. In addition, there are portable restrooms at the site, as well as equipment needed to restring rackets.

Beginning just a day later, Illinois State will host the 2014 MVC Men's Golf Team Championship, which will take place April 28-29 at the TPC Deere Run. Located in Silvis, Ill., in the Quad Cities region, TPC Deere Run has hosted the PGA TOUR's John Deere Classic since 2000 and also hosts many other golf events throughout the year. TPC Deere Run's championship course was featured as one of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses by Golf Digest, as well as ranked fifth in the state of Illinois by GolfWeek Magazine.

Illinois State alum and former PGA TOUR professional D.A. Weibring masterfully preserved the natural, rolling landscape along the Rock River to create a championship golf course beautifully framed by oak trees and accented by small ponds and deep ravines.

The 2014 MVC Softball Championship will be played at Marian Kneer Softball Stadium, May 8-10. The champion of the tour¬nament, which was awarded on a bid basis, receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2014 MVC Softball Championship, which ISU previously hosted in 2007, will feature eight teams in a single-elimination format, with the top two seeds receiving byes to the semifinals. The complex features a natural grass playing surface, lights, convenient parking, outstanding media facilities and excellent seating for fans.
