Redbirds Win Doubles and Singles Titles at Louisville Invite

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Illinois State men's tennis team won the doubles and two singles titles at the Louisville Invitational Saturday Nov. 10 in Louisville, Ky. The Redbirds went 20-4 overall in this weekend's tournament, which marks the conclusion of the fall season.

Alexander Pelaez and Muddappa Appanervanda defeated Renato Antun and Fernando Mussolini of Belmont, 8-4, in the semifinal round of doubles action. The duo then took down Luis Elizondo and Colton Buffington of Louisville, 8-3, in the final round to win the doubles title.

"I am extremely proud of the guys this weekend and for the progress they have made this fall," said head coach Cris James. "I think they are buying into the idea of toughness and it is really playing off for them."

The Redbirds also found success in singles play at this weekend's tournament.

Pelaez defeated Renato Antun of Belmont, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the final round of singles play where he then beat Luis Elizondo of Louisville, 6-3, 6-1, to win the flight A singles title. Appanervanda took down Hugo Almonte of Morehead State, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the final round. He then defeated David Clifford of Morehead State, 6-1, 7-5, to claim the flight B singles title.

"All the guys played great this weekend and it was nice to see their hard work rewarded with a couple of titles," said James.

Michael Sellitto was defeated by David Clifford of Morehead State, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals, while Jacob Wilson lost to Luis Elizondo of Louisville, 6-2, 6-2, also in the semifinal round. Erik Brunskog defeated Ji Hoon Heo of Morehead State, 6-1, 6-2, to claim fifth place.

"Hopefully going into the off season here, we will continue the motivation to keep working hard and keep getting better," said James. "With the improvements I have seen thus far, we are sure to do big things this spring."

The conclusion of the Louisville Invitational marks the beginning of the off-season for the `Birds. Play resumes Jan. 18-20 at the MVC Individual Championships.
