COLUMBUS, Ohio. -

Muddappa Appanervanda advanced to the third round of qualifier singles to represent the Illinois State men's tennis team during day one of the ITA Regional Qualifying Championships hosted by Ohio State.

Rolando Torrellas also participated in day one, but fell short in a tough match.

No. 12 seeded Appanervanda defeated Jay Joshi of Detroit, 6-3, 6-0, to advance to the second round where he then beat Wisconsin's Fredrick Strabo in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, Torrellas lost to No. 6 seeded Jeffrey Schorsch of Valapariso, 6-2, 6-2.

The ITA Regional Championship tournament resumes Friday with round three of the qualifying singles matches at 7 a.m. CT. Appanervanda takes on No. 8 seeded, Silviu Mistreanu of Youngstown State.

The main singles draw begins at 11:15 a.m. CT, with Jacob Wilson playing Filip Dzanko of DePaul and Rodrigo Oliveira taking on Notre Dame's Ryan Brandy.

Torrellas and Jakub Eisner begin main doubles match play at 3:30 p.m. CT, when they take on Alex Pasareanu and Fedor Baev of Northwestern. Oliveira and Appanervanda square off against Norte Dame's Wyatt McCoy and Nicolas Montoya.
