ISU Men's Tennis Defeats Saint Louis University
Sept. 30, 2006 St. Louis, Mo - Illinois State men's tennis dominated Saint Louis University in the one day match up at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park, Mo. Saturday, Sep. 30. The match ended in favor of the `Birds. In the first round of doubles Illinois State won all three matches. In singles the `Birds won five of the seven matches. Head Coach Greg Kennett feels that Saint Louis University has an excellent team, but they need work in doubles. "Our strength is in our depth which we demonstrated today," said Kennett. "Our guys can play at all levels which makes us better than most teams." In the second part of the day, SLU and ISU switched their line-ups. The `Birds came out strong again and won two doubles matches and five out of seven singles matches. Leading the way for the Redbirds was, senior, Alfredo Lagarda in round one doubles he paired with Tim Link and defeated Matt Gordon and Adam Reeb (8-2) in singles Lagarda posted a 6-1, 6-2 over Gordon. During the second round of doubles he and Michael Hobson won 8-2 against Anthony Johnson and Gordon. In singles he defeated Paul Feder in a tie breaker 6-3, 6-7, 10-5. "Alfredo played really well all day," said Kennett. "He had an outstanding performance, he moved well, served well and it showed because he was 4-0 for the day." Kennett feels that today was a good day, they had great weather, tennis courts and competition. "This match up gives us more confidence," said Kennett. "We were put under some good pressure situations, and we know where we stand and what we need to work on for the tournament." The `Birds have two weeks off to prepare for the ITA Regional Tournament. This will give injured tennis player, Luka Marinkovic time to heal up from his chest injury and give the team time to prepare. The tournament held in Tulsa, Okla. will take place Oct. 18-23.
