NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State men's tennis senior Erik Brunskog has been awarded the 2013-14 Benoni Green Endowed Scholarship, as announced by head coach Cris James Friday.

When choosing the recipient of this yearly scholarship, James looks for an upperclassman who combines success both academically and athletically.

"I look for guys who are getting it done at the highest level, both academically and on the tennis court," James said. "Erik is a great student. He's still a work in progress on the court, but he was playing number two singles for us last year, with pretty successful results."

Brunskog, a native of Linkoping, Sweden, holds a 3.75 GPA as a business major. He played at Central Florida two seasons before coming to ISU as a junior last year. In his lone season as a Redbird thus far, Brunskog posted overall records of 21-13 in singles and 8-15 in doubles. Playing with recently graduated Alexander Pelaez, Brunskog received a national doubles ranking of 58th and a regional ranking of fourth. He was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Select Team at the MVC Championships.

Established in 1998, the Benoni Green Endowed Scholarship is presented annually to an ISU men's tennis player. The endowment was funded by friends of Green, the former Redbird tennis player who competed at Illinois State prior to World War II. A 1942 graduate, Green was a two-time conference champion and was named to the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1973.

Green was the principal advocate for tennis in Bloomington-Normal for several decades. He organized matches and often rewarded competitors with treats from Nestle-Beich, where he was a manager. He also played a role in the Bloomington Parks and Recreation and Evergreen Racquet Club junior development tennis programs.

"He was a big ambassador for tennis in the community and ISU," James said. "I know he played at ISU and is a big part of helping tennis in this community develop."

First awarded in 1999, the Benoni Green Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
