Redbirds Beat Southern Illinois in First Round of MVC, 4-3

OMAHA, Neb. - The Illinois State men's tennis team beat Southern Illinois in the first round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament Friday at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb. The Redbirds are set to play Drake Saturday in the second round of the competition.

Head coach Cris James was impressed with the effort shown by his team.

"I was happy with how the team did today," said James. "You could tell we really wanted to win. A couple of our guys were really consistent throughout the whole match, which we needed."

Southern Illinois won 2-of-3 matches in doubles play. Stanislas Rodier and Brandon Florez beat Alexander Pelaez and Tuomas Manner in the No. 1 position, 8-3, while Skip Span and Jordan Badenko beat Badr Cherradi Jordan Snyder, 8-5, in the No. 3 spot. Orhan Spahic and Syzmon Opieczonek's win against Willi Peter and Muddappa Appanervanda in the No. 2 position, 8-6, solidified the first point of the competition.

Span began to turn things around for the `Birds, winning his singles match against Brandon Florez, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. In the No. 4 spot, Appanervanda fell to Orhan Spahic, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, as Manner came out on top Stanislas Rodier, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 position, evening out the score 2-2.

In the No. 4 spot, Peter beat Rafael Cuadrillero, 6-1, 7-5, while, Pelaez dropped to Badr Cherradi, 7-6, 6-1, 7-5. With the score tied up again at 3-3, the match came down to the No. 6 spot, as Badenko beat Syzmon Opieczon, 6-2, 6-4 giving the `Birds the win.

"Jordan has been making big strides in the last couple weeks," said James. "He is getting more comfortable in his own skin, he is getting more comfortable in a college dual-match setting, and he is getting to know what he has to do and how he has to play in order to be successful. He did a great job tonight."



The Redbirds match against Drake will begin at 2 p.m.

"I keep telling our guys that if we play to our potential, we definitely can win our match against Drake," said James. "We had a couple guys play to their full potential today but tomorrow, we're going to need everybody to do so."
