Redbirds Defeat Bradley, 4-0, at MVC Championships

WICHITA, Kan. - The Illinois State men's tennis team defeated Bradley, 4-0, in the first round of the MVC Championships Friday, in Wichita, Kan.

Illinois State was off to a strong start in doubles play. First to finish was doubles pair Erik Brunskog and Rodrigo Oliveira who defeated Arthur Romanet and Justin Abrams, 8-3. Next, Alexander Pelaez and Muddappa Appanervanda took down Juan Diego Cuadrado and Hamish Weerasinghe, 8-5. Rolando Torrellas and Jakub Eisner faced Ahmed Albitar and Ashton Kalhorn in an unfinished match.

Head coach Cris James is proud of the team's performance in today's competition.

"I honestly think this was our best played match of the year," said James. "Bradley is a team we beat during the regular season, but they came after us hard in doubles today. Our guys were ready to play from start to finish and I was very proud of their performance."

In the No. 1 spot of singles action, Pelaez faced Cuadrado in an unfinished match. Brunskog also played an unfinished match against Albitar in the No. 2 position. Eisner took down Weerasinghe in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-3, while Wilson defeated Kalhorn, 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 5 spot, Torrellas cruised past Abrams, 6-1, 6-2. And Oliveira faced Romanet in an unfinished match in the No. 6 spot.

"We play Drake tomorrow and they been the best team all year in the Missouri Valley Conference," said James. "It will be a tough match but I feel that if we come out and do the same thing tomorrow that we did today, we have a great chance to make it a competitive match and pull out a win."



The `Birds fell to conference-rival, Drake during the dual match season, 6-1. ISU faces off against Drake at the MVC Championships Saturday, April 27 at an all day event.
