OMAHA, Neb. - The Illinois State men's tennis team swept Creighton, 7-0, Sunday in Omaha, Neb. at the last dual match of the season. Today's match was also the last conference match for the Redbirds this season, who are now 2-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).

Head coach Cris James was proud of the team's overall performance against Creighton.

"After yesterday's match against Drake, I was a little frustrated with the way we came out lacking intensity at the beginning of the match," said James. "But today we did a much better job of that and came out ready to play."

The Redbirds were off to a strong start in doubles action. Rolando Torrellas and Jakub Eisner defeated Ryan Norman and Nick Thompson, 8-3. Erik Brunskog and Jacob Wilson took down Sean Mathison and Brandon Lee, 8-2. Michael Sellitto and Muddappa Appanervanda cruised past Elliott Baker and August Nysted, 8-1.

"I think all of the players played well today," said James. "We had Alex out today which meant everybody had to move up a spot. I think it's important from a mental standpoint that they were all able to do that."

ISU carried its momentum into singles play. In the No. 1 spot, Brunskog beat Sean Mathison, 6-3, 6-2. Wilson represented the Redbirds in the No. 2 spot, defeating Norman 6-4, 7-6. In the No. 3 position, Eisner took down Baker, 7-5, 6-0, and Torrellas defeated Dippel 6-3, 6-2. Appanervanda was victorious against Lee, 7-6, 6-3, while Sellitto defeated Nysted, 6-4, 6-2.

"I think we are ready for the MVC Championships next weekend," said James. "We just need to go out there and be mentally tough and ready to play. We must put together a complete match against the top couple of teams. There's no better time to do that than at the conference tournament."

The `Birds next compete Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 at the MVC Championships in Wichita, Kan. This tournament will conclude the 2012-13 season for the ISU men's tennis team.
