'Birds Set for MVC Home-Opener Against Wichita State
April 15, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team will look to avenge last season's MVC Championship loss, as it hosts Wichita State Saturday at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill. In case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
Last season, the Redbirds won the MVC Regular-Season Championship, but fell, 4-1, to the Shockers in the championship match of the MVC Tournament. Alexander Pelaez picked up the lone Redbird point in the match, defeating Valentin Mihai on the No. 3 court, 6-3, 6-3.
With the loss still fresh in the minds of a majority of this season's squad, head coach Cris James believes his team will be ready to play Saturday.
"Hopefully last year's loss helps fire the guys up," James said. "We're hoping to have a good amount of people out at the match, and that usually inspires our guys as well. We're definitely looking forward to this match."
James also believes that the match will be decided on which team competes harder.
"One of the main things we talk about before every match is competition," James said. "We need to go out and compete well. If we play hard and stay focused, then the results will come."
