April 14, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Wichita State, 6-1, Sunday in Bloomington, Ill. This contest marked the last home match for the Redbirds.
"The guys fought hard today and we had a chance to win in several of the matches, so that was positive," said head coach Cris James. "But we just couldn't get it done at the end. We need to start taking advantage of the chances we're given."
The Redbirds were slow out of the gate, falling behind in doubles action. Erik Brunskog and Muddappa Appanervanda were defeated by Matheus Pereira and Tim Ostojic, 8-4. Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira fell to Ilija Cuic and Erick Reyes, 8-3. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas pulled out the first ISU win of the day, defeating Guillermo Nicol and Tomislav Gregurovic, 8-3.
"We had our chances in doubles today," said James. "We played well at No. 3 doubles. And at No. 1 doubles we were right in it all along but just couldn't execute what we needed to in order to pull out a win."
The `Birds also fell behind in singles play. Pelaez was defeated by Pereira in overtime, 4-6, 6-3, 10-3, in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 spot, Brunskog fell to Cuic, 7-5, 6-2.Wilson also fell in overtime, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, to Ostojic. In the No. 4 position, Torrellas was defeated by Gregurovic, 6-3, 6-2. Eisner pulled out the only singles win for the `Birds by taking down Nicol, 7-6, 6-2. And in the No. 6 spot, Oliveira was defeated by Reyes, 6-4, 6-2.
"We don't have any moral victories but I don't feel like we got blown out of the match," said James. "We made chances for ourselves but just didn't convert. At the end of the day I give credit to Wichita State. They are a good team."
ISU resumes conference play Saturday, April 20 at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
