NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Southern Illinois, 5-2, Sunday, April 7 at Gregory Street Courts. Today's match marked the beginning of conference play for the Redbirds, who are now 5-11 this season.

The Redbirds were slow out of the gate, falling behind in doubles action. First to finish was doubles pair Erik Brunskog and Michael Sellitto, who were defeated by Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek, 8-2. Next, Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira fell to Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal, 8-6. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas battled a close match against Badr Cherradi and Jonny Rigby, but were defeated 8-7.

Head coach Cris James was disappointed in the team's doubles performance today.

"I felt like four of the six guys didn't come ready to play and we dug ourselves a big hold early on," said James. "It was good that we fought back in No. 1 doubles and came close. But we need to be better fundamentally. We need to dig more balls and do less fancy stuff to make the other team earn it."

In the No. 1 spot of singles play, Pelaez defeated Florez 6-4, 7-6. Brunskog fought tough against Jorge Cavero but was defeated, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Wilson fell to Badr Cherradi, 2-6, 2-6, while Torrellas was defeated by Jonny Rigby, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6. In the No. 5 spot, Oliveira took down Rafael Cuadrillero, 6-1, 6-3. Sellitto represented the Redbirds in the No. 6 spot, falling to Martijn Admiraal, 7-6, 3-4, 3-6.

"I definitely give Southern Illinois some credit," said James. "They fought harder than us and wanted it a little more. I told the guys that I am just frustrated because I don't think we are up to the standards we expect from ourselves. I was also frustrated because instead of working their butts off and trying to earn it, some of the guys were acting like they are entitled to win."

The Redbirds take on Bradley Thursday, April 11 in Peoria, Ill. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
