NORMAL, Ill. - Coming off their first conference match defeating Creighton, 7-0, last weekend the Illinois State men's tennis team look to continue their winning ways as they host Southern Illinois Friday April 6, at 3 p.m. The Redbirds then take on Indiana State Saturday at 1 p.m. all matches will be held at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.

The Redbirds are heading into conference action in full force. With only six matches left to play in the regular season, the squad holds an 8-6 mark and is 1-0 in the MVC.

Head coach Greg Kennett is expecting top performances out of all his players.

"This is huge weekend for us," said Kennett. "Overall our team has played well, however I think that this is the time where we all need to step up and play well as a team. We have had some good performances, but as a team we have not stepped up all at once. This is the weekend when we really need to reach that level."

Illinois State, seeded No. 2 in the MVC, have a challenging conference road ahead of them as they take on SIU and Indiana State this weekend.

"We are going to be going up against two talented teams who both have good coaches," said Kennett. "Conference matches are always intense and this weekend is going to be a battle for the win."

The Salukis are currently 9-4 overall and are 0-1 in the MVC, dropping their first conference match of the season to Indiana State in a 4-3 decision. The Sycamore's will be looking for their second Valley win after defeating Southern Illinois last weekend. Indiana State is currently 6-8 on the season and 1-0 in the MVC.

Southern Illinois and Indiana State are both strong on top, but Kennett is confident in his top players.

"Yohann (Nograbat) is capable of beating anybody at one and Alfredo (Lagarda) has the game to do well at two," said Kennett. "We need to stay mentally tough and go into the matches knowing we can win."
