Redbirds Finish 1-1 in First Round of MT Shootout

Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Illinois State men's tennis team went 1-1 in the first round of the MT Shootout tournament Saturday, March 30 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
In the first match of the day, the Redbirds fell to Georgia State, 4-1, in singles action. In the No. 1 spot, Alexander Pelaez faced Victor Valente in an unfinished match. Erik Brunskog was defeated by Thomas Cook, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Jacob Wilson fell to Lucas Santa Ana, 6-3, 6-4, and Rolando Torrellas was defeated by Robert Schulze, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot. Jakub Eisner was the only Redbird to come out victorious in the first match by taking down Paul Schuette, 6-2, 6-4. And in the No. 6 position, Rodrigo Oliveira was defeated by Sofiane Chevallier, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"Today was a very big day for Jakub and Rodrigo," said assistant coach J.P. Ritchie. "Jakub has been struggling a lot and was able to get back on track with two wins in the second match today. Rodrigo also has had several close matches lately so it was big for him to pull out a win against Florida Atlantic."
The Redbirds then moved into the consolation semifinal round against Florida Atlantic winning, 4-1. In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez fell to Fantova in a close, 7-5, 6-4, match. In the No. 2 spot, Brunskog defeated Neuner, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, while Wilson was defeated by Morin-Kougoudeff, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Torrellas cruised past Dubuque in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 5 spot, Eisner beat Meade, 6-4, 6-4, and Oliveira took down Samberg, 7-6, 6-3.
"Today's wins for Jakub and Rodrigo especially should be very good for both of their confidences moving forward into tomorrow's matches," said Ritchie.
ISU resumes competition at the MT Shootout tomorrow against Troy at 10 a.m.
