Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Illinois State men's tennis team will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. this weekend to compete in the MT Shootout tournament. This will be the first tournament of the spring season for the team, which has a 5-10 overall record.
"The competition this weekend should be great," said head coach Cris James. "There are eight teams going and I would have to guess that pretty much all of them could beat one another on a given day. Many of them are teams we have not seen before so that presents some challenges, but also is a good thing right now because we should have no pre-conceived notions about what the results should be."
The Redbirds are hoping to come back from a seven match losing streak, falling to Ball State, 4-3, in a close last match.
"We could really use a couple wins to get back on track after a tough stretch and heading into conference play," said James. "After the last match I challenged our young guys to step it up. I really like this group and they are working hard. The bottom line is that we need more production from the lower part of our lineup and I let them know that. We are hoping they will step up to the challenge."
The `Birds begin competition at the MT Shootout Saturday, March 30 at an all day event.
