WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by UNC- Wilmington, 7-0, Saturday, in Wilmington, N.C. The Redbirds have been 0-3 on the road this week, bringing the team to an overall 5-9 season record.

"Overall, it was a difficult trip," said assistant coach J.P. Ritchie. "We played three very good teams and struggled to make the adjustments to playing outdoors."

In doubles action, Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira had the lead against Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider in an unfinished match. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas were defeated by Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, 8-3, while Jacob Wilson and Michael Sellitto fell to Kaue Pereira and Santtu Leskinnen, 8-4.

"We have a very talented but young team, and every once and a while we have growing pains," said Ritchie. "We just need to continue to work and remember that we are building towards our goal of winning conference and taking each match in stride."

The `Birds went 0-6 in singles play. In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez fell to Rafael Aita, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Torrellas represented the Redbirds in the No. 2 position, falling to Chris Cooprider, 6-3, 6-0. In the No. 3 spot, Eisner lost to Sam Williams, 6-0, 6-1, while Wilson fell to Kosta Blank, 6-3, 6-7, 10-4. In the No. 5 spot, Sellitto was defeated by Zach Hublitz, 6-2, 6-4, and Oliveira fell to Santtu Leskinnen, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot.

"We still have time to get where we need to be to make our goals a reality," said Ritchie.
