Redbirds Fall to Old Dominion, 7-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was swept by Old Dominion, 7-0, Friday in Wilmington, N.C. The Redbirds have been 0-2 on the road this week, bringing the team to an overall 5-8 season record.
"Despite the outcome, today's match was significantly better than our first outdoor match two days ago," said assistant coach J.P. Ritchie.
In doubles action, Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira fell to Carlos Lopez Villa and Darrah Glavin, 8-3. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas gave ISU its only win of the day by taking down Albert Ochagavia and Jonas Kuwert, 8-3. Michael Sellitto and Jacob Wilson were defeated by Wesley Barrett and Tim Schweig, 8-1.
"Jakub and Rolando played exceptionally well and didn't let up once they had a big lead," said Ritchie. "There win was a big boost moving us into singles and gave us some momentum moving forward. I am looking forward to them giving us another great performance tomorrow."
The Redbirds went 0-6 in singles play, fighting strong in several tough matches against Old Dominion. In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez was defeated by Carlos Lopez Villa, 7-6 (6), 6-4, while Torrellas fell to Albert Ochagavia in the No. 2 position, 6-3, 7-5. In the No. 3 spot, Eisner lost to Dante Terenzio, 6-1, 6-3, and Wilson was defeated by Wesley Barrett, 7-6 (4), 6-4. In the No. 5 spot, Sellitto fell to Jonas Kuwert, 7-6 (13), 7-5. Oliveira also fell in the No. 6 position to Tim Schweig, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
"We were in every singles match but one with multiple chances but just couldn't come away with any wins," said Richie. "We will look to continue to make improvements moving into tomorrow's match with UNCW."
The `Birds will remain in Wilmington tomorrow to face UNC-Wilmington in a noon match.
