WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Yale, 6-1, in Wilmington, N.C. Wednesday, March 13. Today's loss brings the Redbirds to an overall 5-7 season record.

Assistant coach J.P. Ritchie was happy with the `Birds effort despite some setbacks.

"Today was our first outdoor match and we showed that in our performance," said Ritchie. "We also had to play without our No. 2 player which forced the rest of the guys to play higher than ideal."

In doubles play, Muddappa Appanervanda and Alexander Pelaez were defeated by Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers, 8-6. Rodrigo Oliveira and Rolando Torrellas faced Patrick Chase and John Huang in an unfinished match. Jakub Eisner and Michael Sellitto fell to Zach Dean and Matt Saiontz, 8-6.

"Doubles went pretty well overall," said Ritchie. "We had chances in every match. In singles play, Rolando played well and Rodrigo showed a lot of heart coming back to win the second set after losing 6-0 in the first."

The Redbirds were not quite able to recover in afternoon singles. In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez fell to John Huang, 6-1, 6-3, while Eisner was defeated by Marc Powers in the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 3 position, Torrellas gave ISU its only win by taking down Daniel Hoffman, 7-6, 6-3. Appanervanda fell to Martin Svenning, 6-2-6-2, in the No. 4 spot and Jacob Wilson was defeated by Zach Krumholz, 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 6 position, Oliveira fought a tough battle but fell to Zach Dean, 6-0, 6-7 (7), 13-11.

"I was pleased with the guy's effort today and hope to make a few small adjustments before our next match on Friday," said Ritchie.

The Redbirds resume competition Friday, March 15 against Old Dominion in Wilmington, N.C. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
