SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Illinois, 4-0, Tuesday in South Bend, Ind. Today's loss brings the Redbirds to an overall 5-6 season record.

Head coach Cris James thought today's competition was competitive overall.

"A 4-0 score doesn't tell the whole story," said James. "I was pretty happy with the way we played today. I think there was a pretty good chance Alex was going to win his match. And Muddappa looked like he was going into a third set in his match which could have gone either way. We were competitive and right in there with them. We just need to believe in ourselves a little bit more."

In doubles action, Muddappa Appanervanda and Erik Brunskog were defeated by Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski, 8-5, while Rolando Torrellas and Jakub Eisner fell to Alex Jesse and Farris Gosea, 8-2. Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira took down Stephen Hoh and Jared Hiltzik, 8-1.

"In my mind we should have won in doubles because we had all the chances we needed," said James. "In singles we were still going in three of the matches and a couple of the matches we lost were close first sets and we just didn't get it done. I honestly don't think Illinois is that much better than us that we aren't able to beat them."

In the No. 1 spot of singles play, Pelaez faced Jared Hiltzik in an unfinished match. Brunskog also played an unfinished match against Stephen Hoh in the No. 2 position. Torrellas was defeated by Tim Kopinski, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot, while Eisner fell to Farris Gosea, 7-5, 6-0. In the No. 5 spot, Appanervanda had the lead against Ross Guignon in the third set of an unfinished match. And in the No. 6 spot, Jacob Wilson was defeated by Brian Page, 6-3, 6-4.

"For our next match we will be getting into outdoor tennis," said James. "That will kind of change things up a little bit but we will see how we adapt to that."
