RICHMMOND, Va. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Virginia Commonwealth, 6-1, Saturday, March 2 in Richmond, Va. The Redbirds went 0-2 on the road this weekend and are now 5-5 overall this season.

ISU was off to a slow start in doubles action. Muddappa Appanervanda and Erik Brunskog fell to Alexis Heugas and Dylan McCloskey, 8-2, while Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas were defeated by Max Wennakoski and Michael Voscek, 8-6. Alexander Pelaez and Rodrigo Oliveira faced Jamie Vazquez and Alejandro Argente in an unfinished match.

"We did some better things today than we did yesterday," said head coach Cris James. "We had a different line up in doubles and saw some positives. No. 2 and 3 doubles played pretty tough. We were probably going to win at No. 3 doubles when it got stopped, and their No. 3 doubles team is very good. But there are still a lot of key moments in matches that we are not taking advantage of."

The `Birds were only able to pull out one win in singles play. In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez fell to Alexis Heugas, 7-6, 6-3. Brunskog lost to Max Wennakoski, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Torrellas was defeated by Claes Goransson, 6-4, 6-0, and Eisner fell to Alejandro Argente, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot. Michael Sellitto was defeated by Jamie Vazquez, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 5 position. Appanervanda pulled out the only ISU win by taking down Pascal Domnik,1-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the No. 6 spot.

"Alex played a really good player and kept the match close so that was good," said James. "Mudduappa gave us our only singles win. He started off the match slow but got himself together so I was happy to see that he was able to turn that around. Everyone else played close in the first set but then not as close after that."

The next competition for the Redbirds is set for Tuesday, March 5 against Illinois in South Bend, Ind.

"We don't really have anything to lose against Illinois," said James. "Illinois is a tough team but I honestly feel that our team is capable of beating some of these tough teams. We just need to figure out a way to put everything we've been working on together on the same day."
