WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Williams and Mary in a close 4-3 match Friday, March 1 in Williamsburg, Va. Today's loss puts the Redbirds at an overall 5-4 season record.

Head coach Cris James is disappointed with the team's toughness today, which is one of the things he has been stressing all year.

"Today we were soft, which is what we can't afford to be," said James. "We're not trusting ourselves and being aggressive when we need to be. We have to be way tougher than we were today."

In doubles action, Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog were defeated by Anderson and Chaffee, 8-5. Rolando Torrellas and Jakub Eisner took down Hung and Bank, 8-3, while Rodrigo Oliveira and Muddappa Appanervanda fell to Hoagland and Vodeslav, 8-5.

"The only bright spot in doubles was Rolando and Jakub," said James. "They are on a good streak right now. The other two teams didn't get it done today."

In the No. 1 singles spot, Pelaez defeated Anderson, 6-4, 7-6, and Brunskog cruised past Chaffer, 6-4, 6-2, in the No.2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Eisner fell to Vodeslav, 6-1, 6-0, while Torrellas lost to Hoagland 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Appanervanda was defeated by Banks in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-0. And in the No. 6 spot, Jacob Wilson defeated Hung 4-6, 7-6.

"We fought hard in singles but didn't play well in a couple of key spots," said James. "Alex, Erik and Jacob won but the rest of the guys lost."

The Redbirds will travel to Richmond, Va. Saturday to take on Virginia Commonwealth. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
