BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team defeated Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, at its first home event of the season in Bloomington, Ill. The Redbirds went on to sweep Butler, 7-0, in the second match of the double header season opener. ISU is now 5-3 overall this season.

The Redbirds were off to a good start against UIC winning 2-of-3 doubles matches. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas defeated Alexanser Raa and Rahul Kamath, 8-4, while Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira took down Alan Reifer and Christopher Cole, 8-4. Michael Sellitto and Jacob Wilson faced Issac Lloveras and Maurizio Feilo in an unfinished match.

"I was very pleased with what the team did today," said head coach Cris James. "Obviously with seven guys playing not everyone will play their best but they all did good things. I asked them to come out and compete hard and they never gave the opposing teams an opening which was great."

In the No. 1 spot of singles action, Alexander Pelaez took down Alexander Raa, 6-3, 6-0. Torrellas defeated Issac Lloveras, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot while Eisner beat Alan Reifer, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot. In the No. 4 position, Wilson won a tough match against Christopher Cole, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6. Oliveira defeated Maurizio Feoli, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot and Sellitto cruised past Rahul Kamath, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 6 position.

"I think our doubles is definitely getting a little better so that is a good thing," said James. "I was happy with our senior, Alex. He is really stepping up as a leader and taking care of business."

ISU carried its momentum into the second match of the day against Butler, once again winning 2-of-3 doubles matches. Torrellas and Eisner defeated Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon, 8-4. Appanervanda and Oliveira faced Tommy Marx and Pulok Bhattacharya in an unfinished match. Pelaez and Sellitto beat Sam O'Neill and Brandon Woods, 8-3.

In singles action, Pelaez took down Pulok Bhattacharya, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot. Torrellas defeated Austin Woldmoe, 7-6, 7-5, and Eisner beat Tommy Marx, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 position. Wilson defeated Sam O'neill, 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 4 spot while Appanervanda took down Brandon Woods, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot. Oliveira beat Billy Weldon, 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 6 position.

"We are going to get back to work on Monday," said James. "Our schedule gets tougher from here so we need to keep improving little by little."
