Redbirds Fall to Western Michigan, 4-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team was defeated by Western Michigan, 4-3, Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich. Today's loss brings the Redbirds to an overall 3-3 season record.

The Redbirds were off to a slow start with doubles play. Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog were defeated by Nadin Indre and Ruben Greiner, 8-4. Rolondo Torrellas and Jakub Eisner faced Andrew Cahn and Aaron Wong in an unfinished match, and Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira fell to Ross VanderPloeg and Jim Beckwith, 8-4.

Head coach Cris James thinks the team played tough, despite a disappointing outcome.

"We competed hard today," said James. "I was proud of the way we fought for everything. We have seven guys play today and give it everything they had."

In singles play, Pelaez took down Nadin Indre, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot and Brunskog defeated Ross Vanderploeg in the No. 2 position, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Eisner played tough but fell to Aaron Wong, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot. In the No. 4 position, Torrellas beat Ruben Greiner, 6-2, 6-3. Appanervanda was defeated by Andrew Cahn, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, and Jacob Wilson fell to Pablo Mora, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 6 spot.

"There are still a few little things we need to improve on," said James. "There were a couple matches that we lost in three sets, so I keep stressing to the guys that it comes down to the little things. One moment here or there can change the whole outcome to the match."

The `Birds host their first home matches of the season Saturday, Feb. 16 in a double header against Illinois-Chicago at 2:30 p.m. and Butler at 6:30 p.m.
