KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team defeated Cleveland State, 5-2, Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Redbirds are now at an overall 3-2 season record.

Head coach Cris James is proud of the team's toughness in today's competition.

"Today was a good day," said James. "It's always good when you play close, competitive matches and get the job done. When you come through in those important moments it builds a lot of confidence. We had a couple guys pull through today in some key moments."

In doubles action, Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog fell to Ali Shabib and Niklas Jonsson, 8-6, and Jakub Eisner and Rolondo Torrellas were defeated by Joe VanMeter and Nolan Marks, 8-6. Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira pulled out the only ISU doubles win by taking down Matt Ford and Matt Kuelker, 8-5.

Although ISU fell behind early in doubles action, the `Birds were able to gain some momentum in afternoon singles.

"Alex and Erik both clinched their singles matches within five minutes of each other when they were looking like they could potentially go either way," said James. "I think those two wins took some of the heat off of the other guys."

In the No. 1 spot, Pelaez was victorious, 6-2, 7-6 (10), in a close match against Jorg Van Der Vloet. Eisner couldn't quite get it done and was fell to Matt Kuelker, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 position, Brunskog took down Ali Shabib, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Torrellas defeated Joe VanMeter, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot. Appanervanda cruised past Matt Ford in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-0, while Jacob Wilson defeated Nolan Marks, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 position.

"Tomorrow's match will be against another good, tough team and we're going to have to play tough again if we want another victory," said James. "We need to play well in those important moments so hopefully we can do that in tomorrow's match as well."
