All three freshmen won their matches.
IOWA CITY, Iowa. - The Illinois State men's tennis team won its first dual match of the season against Iowa Friday in Iowa City, Iowa. The Redbirds won today's competition with a final score of 5-2.
Head coach Cris James was happy with the team effort of today's match.
Illinois State lost two doubles matches, giving Iowa the momentum early in the competition. Erik Brunskog and Rolondo Torrellas were defeated by Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan, 8-3, while Michael Sellitto and Jakub Eisner fell to Joey White and Chase Tomlins, 8-6.
"I knew that we were not polished in doubles yet and still are working with a couple new teams," said James. "We kept it close but couldn't quite get it done. We knew we needed all six guys to fight hard in singles and that's what they did."
Despite a let down in doubles action, the Redbirds dominated in singles play. Alexander Pelaez was able to find some momentum and defeat Matt Hagan, 7-6, 6-2, in the No. 1 spot. Brunskog defeated Jonas Dierckx, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, in the No. 2 spot while Eisner defeated Juan Estensorro, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. After a tough battle, Jacob Wilson couldn't quite pull out a win and was defeated by Garret Dunn, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 4 spot. Torrellas took down Dominic Patrick, 6-4, 6-2, and Sellitto beat Michael Swank, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.
"I was extremely proud of the guy's singles performance and we also had all three of our freshmen win today, with Michael clinching the match for us," said James. "They were able to come through in some key moments at their first dual match. I think this was important for their confidence as well to win their first dual match."
The `Birds will take on Loyola Marymount Saturday, Jan. 26 in Iowa City, Iowa. The match is set to being at 1 p.m.
