NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team is set to being the dual match season Friday, Jan. 25 against Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa at 4:30 p.m. The Redbirds will remain in Iowa City Saturday, Jan. 26 to take on Loyola Marymount at 1:00 p.m.
Head coach Cris James is ready to begin the dual match season strong.
"We are going in there planning on getting two wins to start our season," said James. "Of course we are expecting some tough competition from Iowa and Loyola Marymount as well, so I am sure they will have something to say about that."
The Redbirds enter the spring dual match season after a successful fall completion. Doubles team Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog were ranked No. 58 in the nation and No. 4 in the Midwest region. Pelaez was also awarded a No. 17 ranking in the Midwest region for his accomplishments in singles play.
"After a successful fall season my plan is for us to keep improving and getting better throughout the entire year so I want us to go in and compete as hard as we can, hopefully get some wins, and we will see where we are at," said James. "We spent some time working on individual things with each guy this week and spent some additional time on doubles as well trying to get that up to speed"
The `Birds are also excited for the season debuts of freshmen Rolondo Torrellas and Jakub Eisner, after joining the team earlier this January.
