DES MOINES, Iowa. - Doubles team Alexander Pelaez and Jakub Eisner dominated in the final round of doubles play at the MVC Individual Championships Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa. The Redbirds were defeated in three final rounds of singles, and two semi final rounds of doubles. Today's competition concluded the tournament.
Pelaez and Eisner played tough in the final round of doubles action defeating Alen Salibasic and James McKie of Drake, 8-7 (3), for the championship win in the No. 1 doubles flight.
"It was nice for Alex in his senior year to get an MVC title in doubles, and also for Jakub to win as a freshman," said head coach Cris James. "All three of our freshmen did pretty well and won a few matches this weekend."
Despite a first place win in doubles action, James thought the day could have gone a little better overall.
"Drake was the dominating team this weekend and we knew they were going to be very good competition," said James. "We played right around our expectations but at the same time we still have some work to do. We have the next couple of months to get to the point where we can challenge Drake a little more than we did this weekend."
Rolondo Torrellas fell to Ben Lott of Drake, 6-3, 6-2, in the final round of singles action. Erik Brunskog was also defeated in singles by Robin Goodman of Drake, 6-2, 6-2, while Michael Sellitto lost to Grant Tesmer of Drake, 6-2, 6-3.
Muddappa Appanervanda and Torrellas were defeated by Alvaro Gutierrez and Matheus Pereira of Wichita State, 8-6, in the doubles semi finals, while Jacob Wilson and Sellitto fell to Michael Davis and Arthur Romanet of Bradley, 8-7 (5).
"Overall we played pretty well this weekend but I look forward to seeing some bigger and better things from this team this season," said James.
The `Birds head home today to begin preparation for their first match of the spring season Jan. 25 in Iowa City, Iowa. The match it set to start at 4:30 p.m.
