ISU Advances to Semi Finals at MVC Individual Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa. - The Illinois State men's tennis team advanced to the semi final round of singles action at the MVC Individual Championships Friday, Jan. 18 in Des Moines, Iowa. All seven Redbirds were able to advance in their flights, ending the day with an overall record of 10-3.

Head coach Cris James thinks the Redbirds are off to a great season start.

Erik Brunskog took down Tomislav Gregurovic of Wichita State, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7), before beating Hamish Weerasinghe of Bradley, 6-4, 7-5. Alexander Pelaez defeated Billy Paluch of Creighton, 6-3, 6-2, in singles action, and then took down Arthur Romanet of Bradley, 6-3, 6-4, to finish first in flight one.

"Erik was down a couple of points in his first match but was about to come back and pull out a win," said James. "It was good to see him stick with it and come through in the clutch moments. Alex also dominated in the first match and won pretty convincingly in the second."

Michael Sellitto also went undefeated in singles after taking down Ryan Drake of Drake, 6-2, 6-1, and then beating Martijn Admiraal of Southern Illinois. Jacob Wilson lost his first match of the day, 6-4, 6-4, to Guillermo Nicol of Wichita State, but went on to defeat Ryan Norman of Creighton, 6-2, 6-4. Muddappa Appanervanda defeated Juan Diego Cuadrado of Southern Illinois, 7-6 (5), 6-4, before falling to Justin Abrams of Bradley.

Recent recruits Jakub Eisner and Rolondo Torrellas had impressive first performances as Redbirds.

Torrellas started off his Redbirds career with a 2-0 performance after defeating Quinn Dippel of Creighton, 6-1, 7-6 (6), and then Szymon Opieczone of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 6-1. Eisner beat Diego Cuadrado of Bradley, 6-2, 6-1, before losing to Jean Erasmus of Drake, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Redbirds hope to continue today's singles success into tomorrow's doubles action.

"We're trying out two new doubles teams tomorrow so I am excited to see how that goes," said James. "Then hopefully we'll do well in singles play and advance a lot of the guys to the finals."

The `Birds continue play at the MVC Individual Championships Saturday, Jan. 19 beginning with doubles action in the morning, and ending the day with singles play.
