NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State men's tennis standouts Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog have been ranked No. 58 in the nation and No. 4 in the Midwest region in doubles for their performance in the fall 2012 season by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Pelaez was also awarded a No. 17 ranking in the Midwest region for his accomplishments in singles play.

Head coach Cris James is thrilled with the duo's rankings.

"It is great that we have a doubles team ranked after the fall season for the sixth year in a row now, so we are definitely building a tradition of strong doubles at Illinois State," said James. "This is the fourth different partner Alex has been nationally ranked with so that really tells you something about his ability to play doubles. And he is taking it a step further this year with his leadership."

Pelaez and Brunskog, who completed the fall season with an overall 4-3 doubles record, are the sixth nationally-ranked doubles team Illinois State has produced in the previous six years. Pelaez was nationally-ranked No. 34 with doubles partner Tuomas Manner in 2012, No. 42 with Timon Reichelt in 2011 and No. 55 with Fillip Miljevic in 2010.

Pelaez also finished the fall 2012 season with an overall 9-4 singles record to earn the honor of a No. 17 national ranking.

"One of my goals for this team is to qualify for the NCAA Championships in doubles at the end of the year," said James. "In order for them to do that, they will have to try and improve their ranking, but this gives them a good starting point."

James has high hopes for this dynamic duo as the Redbirds enter the spring 2013 season.

"Alex and Erik have the potential to beat any team on a given day, they can be that good," said James. "So now the task for them is to make sure they are consistent in their performance from day to day and they are sure to do big things."
