Men's Tennis Puts Together Successful Day 1 at Ball State Invite

The Illinois State men's tennis team ended day one of the Ball State Invite hosted at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. The Redbirds won seven out of 10 singles matches for the day and four of five doubles matches.

Head coach Mark Klysner was happy with the outcomes of Friday's matches.

"I'm happy with the day we had. We started the day winning 7 of 10 singles matches which was a momentum booster for our team," Klysner said.

For the A bracket, Jacob Wilson defeated Gerad Guell of IPFW 6-1, 6-2, in the first round. Wilson then beat Flip Dep Dzanko of DePaul 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals round.

Rolando Torrellas received a first round bye, then defeated Tim Corwin of Depaul 6-3, 6-4.

In the B bracket, Muddappa Appanervanda went undefeated in play for the day, beating Manual Laboy of IUPUI 6-1, 6-1, and Paul John of DePaul 6-2, 6-4. Jakub Eisner fell to Patrick Elliott of Ball State 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. Eisner then lost in the Consolation round to Jonathan Raa of IPFW.



Rodrigo Oliveira beat Nico Kastunowicz of Indianapolis in a three sets 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11), before being defeated by Ray Lenoard of Ball State in a tough three set match 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3).

Freshman, Dylan Steffens earned his first win as a Division 1 tennis player defeating Connor Andrews of IPFW 6-3, 6-3. Steffens then fell to Patrick Downs of Ball State 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action, Appanervanda and Oliveira advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi of IPFW, 8-6. They then beat Fillip Dzanko and Sten Leusink of Depaul, 8-6.

The duo of Steffens and Wilson received a first round bye, then beat Jonathan Raa and Karl-Erik Wangsten Oye of IPFW, 8-6.

Einser and Torrellas defeated IUPUI's Jacob Bradley and Thomas Gans, 8-5. The pair then fell to Paul John and David Vieyra of Depaul, 9-8 (4).
