MUNCIE, Ind. - On a rainy day in Muncie, Ind., Filip Miljevic was the only Illinois State men's tennis player to advance to the second round of the Ball State Invitational. Head coach Cris James called today `disappointing' as three other Redbirds were unable to close out their matches.

"We played stretches of great tennis today," James said. "We could be 4-0 and probably should be right now. As a team we just need to recognize when our chances are there and we need to make it happen during those moments."

Miljevic was able to finish off Xavier's J.T. Torbeck, 6-2, 6-4. However, Xavier Riart-Ferrer, Skip Span and Matej Zlatkovic all fell in super tie-breaker sets as the team posted a record of 1-3 on the day. Riart-Ferrer was downed by Vanja Grgec of DePaul, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. Span lost a disappointing match to Lousiville's Adam Donaldson, 5-7, 6-0, 10-7. Zlatkovic fell to Butler's Bryce Warren, 6-4, 0-6, 10-7.

"The super tie-breaker format kind of hurts us because if a certain player has momentum they can come away with the win," James said. "At the same time, our guys probably should not have been in the position to be playing the tie-breakers. If we let our opponent gain confidence it makes it a lot easier for them to win."

Overall, James still has high expectations for this year's team.

"The bottom line is we have to go out and make it happen," James said. "We can't wait for the other guy to give the game to us. We have to take it to them right away."

Friday's weather forced play indoors which only allowed the field to complete first round singles play. Doubles play will begin Saturday where the Redbirds will look to bounce back.
