Redbirds Finish Day One of The ITA-All American Championships

The Illinois State men's tennis team completed its first day of pre-qualifying singles matches at the ITA All-American Championships Saturday. Rolando Torrellas led the way for the Redbirds by defeating Jonny Cornish of Virginia, 6-3, 6-0.
Jakub Eisner, Rodrigo Oliveira and Muddappa Appanervanda also competed for the Redbirds Saturday. Eisner lost to Oklahoma's Nick Papac, 6-4, 6-4. Appanervanda was defeated by Virginia Tech's Joao Monterio, 6-1, 6-3, and Oliveira lost a close match to Purdue's number one singles player, Szymon Tatarcyzk 6-4, 7-5.
Head coach Mark Klysner was pleased with the way the Redbirds competed.
"Rolando played a great match beating a player from the defending national champions," Klysner said. "That was a great way to start the day off right."
Jacob Wilson and Erik Brunskog had pre-qualifying first round byes. Wilson will take on Brent Lett of Clemson, and Brunskog plays Xavier's Mesa Mei, Sunday.
"Overall I thought we played with good focus and showed we can play with some of the best teams in the country."
The Redbirds resume matches Sunday, at the Michael D. Case tennis center.
