KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team lost eight of nine singles matches Saturday at the Vredevelt Invite hosted by Western Michigan. Despite several close loses in singles, the Redbirds pulled out two wins in doubles action.

Alexander Pelaez and Erik Brunskog defeated Erik Finkenbrink and Craig Cox of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 8-3, while Muddappa Appanervanda and Michael Sellitto beat Michael Tenzer and Michael Tebon of UWGB, 9-8 and 8-6.

Head coach Cris James was disappointed with the team's performance in singles play.

"For the most part, we competed and fought hard but we didn't perform very well in clutch moments," said James. "We had a bunch of close matches, so we were left with a sour feeling at the end of the day."

Pelaez fell to Jimmy Roebker of Xavier, 6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8), while Brunskog was defeated by Mesa Mei of Xavier, 6-4 and 7-5. Jacob Wilson lost to Brandon MacDonald of Xavier, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6), and Appanervanda was defeated by Adam krull of Xavier, 6-0 and 6-2.

"We need to have more toughness and make better shot selections during important moments of the game," said James. "We very easily could have won nine matches today."

The Redbirds will continue play at the Vredevelt Invite Sunday at 8 a.m. with doubles play. Singles action will begin at 9 a.m. Tomorrow's matches will complete the three-day tournament.
