KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team won two out of five single matches Friday at the Vredevelt Invite hosted by Western Michigan. Sophomore Rodrigo Oliveira and Junior Jacob Wilson led the way for the Redbirds as ISU began the 2013-14 season.
Oliveira defeated Pablo Mora of Western Michigan, 6-4, 4-0. Wilson put together a stellar performance, defeating Xavier's Rob Torsch, 6-3, 6-2.
First-year head coach Mark Klysner felt the Redbirds battled in their two doubles matches.
"I thought we played some promising doubles matches, winning one and coming down to the wire in the two matches against Notre Dame," Klysner said. "Collectively, we started a little slow but played better in the latter part of the matches."
In doubles action Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas were defeated by Ryan Brady and Kenneth Sabacinski of Notre Dame, 8-2. Muddappa Appanervanda and Wilson lost, 8-6, in a tough matchup against Michael Fredericka and Dougie Barnard.
Eisner won the first set, 6-3, in his match against Jorg Van der Vloet of Cleveland State before losing, 6-1, 1-0, in singles play. Erik Brunskog also put together a strong first match, winning, 6-1, over Notre Dames Alex Lawson, before being defeated, 6-3, 1-0.
Torrellas came up short to Leopold Islinger of UW-Green Bay, 6-4, 6-2, while Appanervanda put together a strong showing against Xavier's Freedy Abunku but lost, 6-3, 6-2.
"Overall not a bad start, but looking for better results tomorrow," Klysner said.
The Redbirds will continue play at the Vredevelt Invite beginning Saturday with doubles play at 9:30 a.m. Round two of singles play starts up at 10:30 a.m., and at the conclusion of the singles play there will be a 90-minute break before the final round at 2 p.m.
