April 15, 2012
WICHITA, Kan. - The Illinois State men's tennis team fell to Wichita State, 6-1, Sunday at the Genesis Health Club in Wichita, Ka. The loss moves the Redbirds to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"It's not an easy trip to come to Wichita," said head coach Cris James. "Considering we're missing two guys, we put up a pretty good fight. We had chances to win, but we put ourselves in positions where everything had to go right, and it's tough to do that."
Alexander Pelaez and Tuomas Manner teamed up in the No. 1 doubles spot and fell to Matheus Pereira and David Cavalcanti, 9-7, while Jacob Wilson and Skip Span dropped to Guillermo Nicol and Tomislav Gregurovic, 8-1, in the No. 2 position. Willi Peter and Jordan Badenko took the win in the No. 3 spot against Juan Estenssoro and Erick Reyes, 9-7.
"The doubles point came down to the No. 1 spot," said James. "Alex and Tuomas have been great all year and their No. 1 doubles is very good. It was a good match, but we just didn't get it done. I think if we could have won that match, we would have had our chances today."
Pelaez fell in the No. 1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-3, to Matheus Pereira, while Manner dropped to David Cavalcanti in the No. 2 position, 7-6, 2-6, 10-7. In the No. 4 spot, Guillermo Nicol defeated Peter, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, while Wilson dropped to Erick Reyes, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 position. Badenko fell to Juan Estenssoro in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-3.
Span took the only victory in singles action for the `Birds, beating Tomislav Gregurovic in the No. 3 position, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"We just have to play better," said James. "The highest we can finish in the MVC now is third, which is what we will try to do next weekend by winning both of our matches."
The Redbirds take on Bradley at home at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts Friday at 1 p.m. before their match against Southern Illinois Sunday at 11 a.m.
