`Birds Shoot Down Billikens 7-0 in Fifth Consecutive Win
March 25, 2006
ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Illinois State men's tennis team won their fifth straight match against Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Tennis Center. ISU improves to 8-6 while SLU drops to 3-9.
The win against Saint Louis was the fifth shut out win of the spring season for the `Birds, and the win also marks the first five-match win streak since the 2002-03 season.
"This is exactly where we want to be right now going into conference," said Illinois State head coach Greg Kennett. "We continue to play better and better and if we take the energy and the confidence we are gaining with each match we should do very well this spring."
In doubles, Uskokovic and Nuno Jacinto downed SLU's doubles team Adam Reeb and Schoff at the No. 2 slot 8-0. Uskokovic did not let up one match point in both singles and doubles through out the day. Alban Renard and Oscar Beich won their fourth straight doubles match against Paul Feder and McManus at the No. 1 position 8-1.
According to Kennett, Renard and Beich are beginning to find their groove in doubles.
"Alban and Oscar just played terrific today," said Kennett. "They are gaining more confidence in each other and they are playing better and better with each match. I think they will do very well at the No. 1 doubles position during the conference season.
Unfortunately for the Billikens, the team did not have a full roster against the `Birds and had to forfeit two singles matches and a doubles match. The forfeits cost SLU two match points in total.
Illinois State will continue to work hard to produce the results Kennett wants to see.
"We are feeling good about these wins, but we can't take anything for granted," said Kennett. "But if we prepare our selves by having a good week in practice we should be able to beat Bradley. They are a big rival and they are going to want to beat us."
The `Birds open the conference season at home against Bradley at 1 p.m. next Saturday April 1 at the McCormick Courts.
