Eastern Illinois Slides Past Illinois State in a 4-3 Decision
March 4, 2007
NORMAL, Ill.- - In a 4-3 decision, the Illinois State men's tennis team was downed by Eastern Illinois Sunday at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
Illinois State falls to 6-5 and EIU improves to 5-1 on the season.
Head coach Greg Kennett feels that overall the team's performance was not bad.
"I am not sure what changes we are going to make in doubles," said Kennett. "We didn't play that bad today, we got out fought on the court."
Unable to grasp the doubles point the 'Birds were downed at No. 2 and 3. The senior tandem of Alfredo Lagarda and Yohann Nograbat captured the lone win at No. 1 defeating Eastern's Brandon Lenfert and Chris Thomas, 8-6.
Kennett feels that the loss of the doubles point slowed the team's momentum and ultimately cost them the match.
"Loosing the doubles point was crucial," said Kennett. "It is hard to win four singles matches, no matter who you play."
In singles action, Luka Marinkovic rallied to tie the score 1-1 at No. 4 defeating Thomas, 6-2, 6-2. Eastern Illinois' Vuk Milicevic retaliated at No. 2 defeating an injured Lagarda, 6-2, 6-1. Nuno Jacinto tied the score two all by posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lenfert at No. 3.
The 'Birds were feeling the pressure when Nograbat was bested at No. 1 by Chuck Levaque, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Daniel Tobar tied the score three all at No. 6 singles defeating Jordan Nestrud, 6-2, 7-5. In the final match, Jeff Rutherford secured the win for the Panthers at No. 5 defeating Oscar Beich, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
The Redbirds have next weekend off, but will be competing in Charleston, S.C. against Citadel Wed., March 14 at 2 p.m.
