PHILADELPHIA - The Illinois State men's tennis defeated Penn, 5-2, Sunday, giving the Redbirds (4-3), an above-.500 record for the first time this season and their first victory over Penn in program history. Strong play by Rodrigo Oliveira all weekend long helped lead a resilient squad to two non-conference victories.
Oliveira and Muddappa Appanervanda beat Spratt and Kaplan, 8-6, improving their doubles record to 12-2. Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas defeated Nikola Kocovic and Matt Nardella, 8-4, while Jacob Wilson and Urh Kranjc Domiter lost to Jeremy Court and Zach Katz, 8-6.
ISU has gained the early doubles point advantage in five-out-of-seven matches this season. Head coach Mark Klysner was proud of the way his squad fought against Penn.
"I can't be happier with the way the guys fought today. The doubles point was huge to take," Klysner said. "Oliveira and Torrellas were in some battles today but showed a lot of character and pulled out great victories."
In singles play, Eisner beat Kocovic, 6-2, 6-4. Vim De Alwis won against Wilson, 6-4, 6-4, and Appanervanda defeated Nardella, 6-4, 6-0.
