Men's Tennis Earns Momentous Victory Over Belmont

BLOOMINGTON, lll - Doubles partners Rodrigo Oliveira and Muddappa Appanervanda, and Jacob Wilson and Urh Kranjc Domiter, earned victories that sparked Saturday's victory for the Illinois State men's tennis team over Belmont, 5-2, at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
Oliveira and Appanervanda cruised past Mauricio Antun and Hans Nardelli, 6-0. Jacob Wilson and Urh Kranjc Domiter won a hard fought series against Henrik Claesson and Martijn Verberne, 6-4, to earn the doubles point.
Head coach Mark Klysner loved the intensity his team showed out of the gate.
"I was really happy in the way we came out to take the doubles point. It gave us momentum leading into singles play, and the guys did a good job of sustaining their energy and focus," Klysner said.
In singles action Torrellas blanked Claesson, 6-0, 6-0, and Oliveira defeated Nardelli, 6-1, 6-2, to keep the momentum in tack for the Redbirds.
Appanervanda defeated Verberne, 6-4, 6-2, while Eisner's victory over Lovrinovic in a three-set battle, 5-6, 6-3, 10-6, sealed the victory for ISU.
Wilson lost to Antun in three sets, 6-5, 4-6, 10-7. Kranjc was defeated by Dujacquier, 6-4, 6-4.
"It always feels good to get the first win under the belt and we are looking forward to playing Iowa next week," Klysner said.
The Redbirds will be traveling to face Big Ten opponent Iowa, Feb. 1.
