Men's Golf Signs Two for the 2013-14 Season

Dec. 20, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head men's golf coach Ray Kralisadded two new athletes during the early signing period for the 2013-14 season, as Christian Crabill (Mt. Zion, Ill. | Mt. Zion High School) and Kyle Meihofer (Valparaiso, Ind. | Valparaiso High School) signed National Letters of Intent (NLI) to continue their academic and athletic careers at ISU.

Ranked among the top-six in Illinois by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, Crabill finished fourth at the 2012 Illinois Junior PGA Championships, after shooting two-consecutive rounds of 72. He then took 18th at the 2012 Illinois State Junior Amateur Championships, before finishing 22nd at the AJGA Midwest Junior Players Championship, shooting a 221 (71, 77, 73). A 2012 Ryder Cup Junior Academy Team member, Crabill took first at both the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) sectional and regional championships, with rounds of 73 and 70, respectively.

Kralis believes Crabill will be able to transition into college golf quicker than most because of his talent level.

"Christian's natural talent is off the charts," Kralis said. "He develops amazing club-head speed with his swing that should make the transition to college golf easier for him than most. He is very experienced in tournament play and has the potential to make a statement early in his career. As he continues to develop, the sky is the limit, and I believe he will provide many Redbird highlights during his time at Illinois State."

A 2012 Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) All-State golfer, Meihofer averaged a score of 72.6 per round in 2012 throughout his junior campaign. He is ranked among the top-five in Indiana by the Junior Golf Scoreboard, and is nationally ranked in the top-100 by Golfweek for the 2013 recruiting class. He tied for third at the 2012 Boys State Junior Championship in stroke play, recording rounds of 77 and 71. He later took first at the 2012 PGA Junior Series Championship at Purdue, shooting a score of 220 (74, 75, 71) in three rounds of play. Meihofer finished fifth at the 2012 AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open with a three-round score of 223 (78, 73, 72) and was 12th at the 2012 AJGA Music City Junior with the same score. The 2007 and 2009 Northern Indiana Golf Association Player of the Year was a four-time state qualifier for the Vikings.

Like Crabill, Kralis feels Meihofer can help the Redbirds in competition as a freshman.

"As Kyle develops, he has shown glimpses of a very high ceiling and has demonstrated he has another gear that not all have as he fired a 29 at the Junior PGA Championships, featuring seven birdies in nine holes," Kralis said. "He has a great deal of tournament experience, and he has proven he can compete at the top with a PGA Junior Series win this past summer. I look for him to compete for playing time right out of the gate."

The Redbird men's golf team will be back in action on Jan. 26, 2013, as they travel to Placida, Fla., to face Illinois in the Tinervin Cup.
