Men's Golf Heads to Three-Day Lone Star Invitational

Oct. 12, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team will head south to compete at the fourth-annual Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, at the Hill Country Resort Golf Club Sunday through Tuesday.

The Hill Country Resort is a par 72, 6931-yard layout that will host 15 teams. The Redbirds will compete against Arizona, Central Arkansas, Denver, Houston, Houston Baptist, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sacramento State, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State and Utah Valley.

After coming off a tough outing at the Firestone Invitational, the Redbirds must be mentally prepared, as they head into tough competition this weekend.

"We'll see how much we have learned early on as we face another great field this week in San Antonio," head coach Ray Kralis said. "I know we are strong enough to compete at the top, when we play our games well. We need to be more consistent mentally, physically and emotionally if we expect to be more consistent with our scoring. We don't need to be perfect, but we need to be mentally tough and maintain a mindset that invites great play regardless of how it is going. Controlling the things you can control is a simple idea, but not always easy in competition, and I am confident our squad will improve upon our performance last week."

Leading the field for the Redbirds will be junior Wils Hawn followed by senior Ricky Hearden, competing in the No. 2 spot.

Freshman Tyler Gentilella and junior Parker Freiburg will compete in the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively. Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds will be freshman Tyler Pope-Ferguson.

The three-day tournament will start Sunday, playing 18 holes each day. Sunday and Monday will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., while Tuesday's play will begin at 8 a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
