Aug. 12, 2008
WHEATON, Ill. - The first-round of the 2008 Illinois State Amateur at Cantigny Golf completed Tuesday with a handful of Illinois State Redbirds represented. Leading the charge was Tommy Bliefnick, who shot an even-par 72 and is currently tied for 11th.
After recording a par on the first hole, Bliefnick strung together three-consecutive birdies at the par-5 second, par-3 third and par-4 fourth to quickly find himself in red numbers. The junior then carded four-consecutive pars, however had his first hiccup on the par-4 ninth with his first bogey. The Decatur, Ill., native made the turn at 2-under par.
Bliefnick regained the stroke lost on the ninth with birdies on the par-5 11th and 14th, however, had bogeys on the 13th and 18th holes, and a double-bogey on the par-four 16th, ending his round at even-par.
Emerich started his day on the back nine, and carded a birdie on the par-four 16th, but had bogeys at the 10th and 14th holes, making the turn at one-over par. The junior struggled after the turn with two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-four 5th, ending the day 5-over par.
Kellen also started on the back nine and netted six pars, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-five 14th to make the turn at even par. Kellen recorded a birdie on the par-5 7th but had two bogeys and two double-bogeys to end his day 5-over par.

Although Cullen birdied the par-four 1st it was an uphill battle the rest of the nine carding three double-bogeys on the 4th, 6th and 8th, and bogeys on the second and 9th to shoot 79.
Drew North played the front-nine 1-over par with bogeys at the second and 9th, and recorded his first and only birdie on the par-3 8th. The sophomore struggled on the back nine with a triple-bogey on the par-four 12th and ended his round with a string of bogeys. North ended the day 7-over par shooting a 79.
