Bliefnick Awarded Durwood Scholarship
Aug. 4, 2008
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior men's golfer Tommy Bliefnick has been named the 2008 recipient of the L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship. The award is traditionally given to the Most Improved Player from the previous season.
"Being able to improve throughout the year like I did and just knowing I helped out my team in any way is a good feeling," said Bliefnick. "This award shows that all the hard work and time put in is really starting to pay off and I'm just excited for the upcoming season to start."
Bliefnick, a Decatur, Ill., native, struggled scoring in the fall with a 74.9 average, but bounced back in the spring, improving his scoring to 73.2. During the spring, he carded two top-ten finishes, including a top-three finish at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, where he lead the Redbirds to a third-place finish.
Illinois State men's golf coach Ray Kralis was proud of Bliefnick and his determination to be the best.
"The way Tommy stepped up as the year progressed really makes him deserving of this award," said Kralis. "After digging himself into a hole in the fall, Tommy showed his resiliency as he battled back in the spring to compete for the scoring title along with earning all-conference honors."
The L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship is one of 19 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. It is also one of the eight fully-endowed scholarships in athletics.
