NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State men's golf senior Parker Freiburg has been awarded the 2013-14 L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship, as announced by head coach Ray Kralis Friday. The scholarship is traditionally bestowed upon the most-improved men's golfer from the previous season.

After competing in just 25 rounds combined his first two seasons, Freiburg posted a 76.2 scoring-average in 29 rounds during the 2012-13 campaign. After making large strides as a junior, Kralis expects Freiburg to be even better his senior season.

"Parker is ready for a break-out season as his game steadily matures," Kralis said. "Last year, he took it to another level and gave us glimpses of just how dominant he can be as he continues to improve. As his confidence grows closer to matching his talent, I look for him to be a force for us on a consistent basis."

Freiburg a shot career-low 1-over-217 (76-72-69) at the Jackrabbit Invitational (March 11-12). The third-round score of 69 was also a career-best score for Freiburg. The Quincy, Ill., native helped the Redbirds grab a second-place finish at the Valley Championship, posting a three-round score of 227 (77-74-76) and finishing tied for 14th.

Freiburg was also one of just nine Valley men's golfers to be named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. The accounting major boasts a 3.77 combined grade point average.

The Boone scholarship was established with an initial grant from the estate of the late L. Durwood Boone, whose playing skills inspired the start of the Redbird golf program in the 1930s. It was awarded to a Redbird golfer for the first time in 1995.

The L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
