Murphy Named Boone Endowed Scholarship Recipient

July 23, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomore men's golfer Ryan Murphy was named the 2010 recipient of the L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship, as announced by the athletics department Friday. The Boone Scholarship is traditionally awarded to the most improved men's golfer from the previous season.

"This award recognizes a student-athlete on the team that has made great strides and shown improvement," said head men's golf coach Ray Kralis. "We're thrilled to have Ryan on the team. He got off to a little bit of a rough start in the fall, but coming in with a lot of veterans put a little bit of pressure on him. He continued to work hard, stepped up big time in the spring and never once let up in terms of pushing himself. From a coaching standpoint, that is what you're looking for. As you get closer to the end of the season you want to find the guy that is going to make the run for the tape and Ryan is one of those guys."

Murphy competed in six total rounds during the 2009-10 season, including the Weibring Intercollegiate and the ASU Red Wolf Classic. Murphy fired a 74.2 stroke average.

"It is a great honor to be recognized with this award," Murphy said. "Being a student-athlete at ISU is very special. We have the honor to represent the Redbirds and the surrounding community every day that we compete."

The Boone scholarship was established with an initial grant from the estate of the late L. Durwood Boone, whose playing skills inspired the start of the Redbird golf program in the 1930s. It was awarded to a Redbird golfer for the first time in 1995.

The L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship is one of 19 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. It is also one of the eight fully-endowed scholarships in athletics.
