Hawn Awarded D.A. Weibring Endowed Scholarship
July 12, 2013
Hawn is coming off a junior campaign in which he held the lowest per-round average on the squad (74.6). It was Hawn's ability to combine that athletic success with leadership and academic skills that led Kralis to choose the Waterloo, Ill., native as the 18th recipient of the scholarship.
"Wils has made great strides as a player and leader since he stepped foot on campus because of his tremendous work ethic, discipline, and desire to make an impact," Kralis said. "He has established himself as an "MVP" in our program and one of the best golfers in the Missouri Valley Conference, and it is exciting knowing he still has a full season remaining. With his dedication and competitiveness, I expect this year to be his best in the classroom and on the course, and I am confident he will again show why he is so deserving of this award."
Hawn tied for the team-high with 35 rounds played. While steady throughout the season, one of his best performances came at the Kemper Intercollegiate Tournament (April 15-16) in Glenview, Ill., as Hawn led the Redbirds to a third-place finish with a season-low three-round score of 219 (72-74-73). The performance earned him the MVC Golfer of the Week award for the first time in his career.
The Weibring Endowed Scholarship was created in 1994 with proceeds from the D.A. Weibring Redbird Classic. The scholarship is named after the former Redbird golfer, Donald Albert Weibring, Jr., who starred on the PGA Tour and is currently a member of the Champions Tour.
In the summer of 2007, the Illinois State Board of Trustees approved the renaming of the Illinois State Golf Course to Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in honor of Weibring. The endowment rewards a Redbird golf student-athlete who excels both in academics and athletics. In 1995, it became the first athletics endowment to become fully funded at Illinois State.
The D.A. Weibring Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
