Kellen Named MVC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior men's golfer Jeff Kellen was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team Thursday. The two-time All-Valley selection received the academic honor for the first time in his career.
Kellen competed in all 30 rounds of all 11 tournaments this year for the Redbirds and ranked second on the team with a 74.9 stroke average. He finished ninth at the State Farm MVC Tournament, the highest finish by a Redbird, with a 233 (82-75-76) and won the 2009 D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate with a 1-under par 209 (72-68-69). Kellen was the MVC Golfer of the Week twice this season and won the Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award once.
Kellen was one of six student-athletes named to the first team and five student-athletes were named to the second team.
The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic ESPN The Magazine All-America voting. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions, and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship.
