Men's Golf Set to Play for Valley Championship

April 28, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State Redbirds are set to play for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Monday and Tuesday. The Redbirds were picked to finish second in a pre-championship poll with 70 points.

After finishing fifth last year in the tournament, ISU looks to build on its momentum and maintain focus throughout the tournament to surpass MVC favorite Wichita State, who received 81 poll votes to finish first in the tournament.

"I am very pleased with the progress we have made as a team this spring and know we are ready to compete," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Our confidence is high individually and collectively, but we have a great deal of respect for the game and the adversity that comes with it. So, we know mental toughness and patience will be key from start to finish."

Junior Wils Hawn will compete in the No. 1 spot followed by seniors Ricky Hearden and Matt Solis, competing in the No.2 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds is junior Parker Freiburg competing in the No. 4 spot and freshman Tyler Gentilella competing in the No. 5 spot.

Play will begin with the first 36 holes on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday on the par- 72 Dalhousie Golf Club. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
