Hawn Named Valley Golfer of the Week

April 17, 2013

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior Wils Hawn was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday. It marks the third Redbird on the men's golf team to receive the honor this season.

The Illinois State men's golf team closed the 2013 spring season with a third-place finish at the Kemper Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday. ISU was led by Hawn, who finished the tournament with a three-round score of 219 (72-74-73), tying a season-best performance. In the first round, Hawn shot par, while he carded a 2-over-par 74 in the second round of the day. In the final round, Hawn regrouped and shot a 1-over-par 73.

The Redbirds shot a team score of 881 (298-292-291), as they battled rainy and windy conditions throughout the tournament. With the third-place finish, the Redbirds finished behind Big Ten rivals Northwestern (844) and Ohio State (856). ISU bested Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley, which ended the tournament tied for 10th with a team score of 908. Illinois State also finished above five in-state rivals.

Jake Erickson from Southern Illinois was a co-Golfer of the Week selection with Hawn. It is the second-straight weekly honor for ISU, as freshman Tyler Gentilella earned the accolade last week (April 10).

Hawn and the Redbirds will return to the course for the Valley Championship, April 29-30, in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
