April 10, 2013

ST.LOUIS, Mo. - Illinois State freshman Tyler Gentilella was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the week, for the first time of his career, as announced by the league office Wednesday. This marks the second Redbird on the men's golf team to be nominated for the MVC Golfer of the Week this season. Senior Ricky Hearden received the honor on September 13th, along with women's golfer Katie Jean.

Gentilella led the Illinois State men's golf team to a second-place finish at the NYX Hoosier Invitational over the weekend, carding a team score of 855 (284-287-284). Finishing the tournament five strokes behind top-finisher Indiana, the second-place team finish tied a season best and was ISU's best team performance of the spring season.

Gentilella carded a three-round score of 209 (65-72-72), finishing in second place on the individual leader board. His performance marked a career-best score and was his highest placed seed of the year. In the first round, Gentilella fired a 6-under-par 65, while he shot a 1-over-par 72 in the final two rounds.

Andrew Weisenborn, Jr., from Bradley was selected a co-Golfer of the week with Gentilella.
